A data breach could happen to any company big or small.
Don’t assume that because you run a small company that
you won’t be targeted. Often times, id thieves target smaller companies because they know they do not have the high
tech data security systems in place like many larger organizations do.
It is important to have a strong cyber security system in
place within your organization, as well as, to protect yourself against the possibility of a breach happening. Without the proper insurance, a data breach could wind up costing your company thousands of dollars if not more.
A data breach is a security incident in which sensitive, protected or confidential data is copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen or used by an individual unauthorized to do so.
A data breach could be as complex as a cyber hacker hacking his/her way into your network’s computer system or as simple as a laptop being misplaced or stolen or one of your employees inadvertently throws sensitive documents into a trash receptacle that is not secure.
Depending on the state your business is in there are multiple laws and regulations that you need to abide by in the event of a data breach. In most states, if your company is affected by a data breach you will be required to inform your customers or clients whose data may have been compromised or may be potentially at risk. You will also be required to offer those individuals with free credit monitoring for up to a year after the breach. You could be faced with substantial legal liability and regulatory expenses. It would be wise to obtain legal counsel. You also face the risk of losing clients and potential clients out of fear. Your company will have to pay out of pocket for these expenses unless the business has some type of data breach or cyber liability insurance.
Data breach, or as it is commonly called, "cyber liability" insurance is insurance coverage that is designed to specifically meet the expenses resulting from a data breach to your organization.
Data breach/cyber liability insurance typically includes coverage for the following:
Note: A data breach is not typically covered by a traditional insurance policy.
